Who doesn’t love a movie with John C. Reilly, Jonah Hill, and the timeless charm and beauty of Marisa Tomei. With Catherine Keener and Matt Walsh. Produced by Ridley Scott. Ridley Scott ladies and gentlemen. You know this is weird, but I can feel Ridley’s presence during the film. Nice Ridley, this one is a little different than Blade Runner though. It seems difficult to make a bad picture with this cornucopia of genius. Here we find John C. at his best. A depressed divorcee who meets a beautiful single (Tomei) at his ex-wife’s party. Just as things seem as if they are off to a great start enter Cyrus (Hill) her 21 year old son who does not what to lose his mother and closest friend to some stranger. The cine, music, and editing are wonderful. Lots of light. The dialogue and direction are really natural. They play on a lot of subtlety. I don’t care much for the hand held zoom stylistic approach syuff. I know the hand held thing is Director Mark Duplass’ signature, but still. It does give you the feeling that you are a bystander in the scene. It is just not my preference. Cyrus is really a hilarious film. I’m giving it an A+. Highly enjoyed this one.
